Devilbend

Round 5: January 28th @ Devilbend: Format: 4 Ball

With nearly a 2 month break between rounds the MGC members were keen to hit the links of Devilbend, although the heat of the day and steep hills soon started to taker their toll on all who didn’t think ahead and get a cart. Perhaps due to a bit of ring rust from not playing for a while, or feeling the pressure of the first tee, there were more poor drives than good ones, with the most memorable only being seen by the last group, with Sutho failing to make it off the men’s tee with his drive.

With the first 3 groups in the clubhouse only 0.25 separated the top 2 teams, and with the last team seemingly a divided bunch it was anyone’s guess what they would come in with. The bookies generally don’t get things wrong and in this case there were spot on, with early favourites Team 4, captained by Girdy carding 68 off the stick and finishing with 57.5 nett easily beating out 2nd placed Team 3 captained by Red finishing with 59.75 and Team 1 captained by Joe coming in 3rd with 60 nett. This was a remarkable effort by the team, as by all accounts Sutho was a pest all day, with Taffy who was unlucky to be sharing a cart with him wanting out halfway through. For their troubles the winners took home prize pack from major sponsor Mitre 10, t-shirt, beanie and a sleave of genuine McClelland Prov1s.

As mentioned, the bookies don’t usually get things wrong, and this was also true for NAGA. Team 2, captained by Billy A couldn’t capitalise on their high handicap to finish 1.125 off the pace to easily take out NAGA for the day. To make matters worse they were the only team to card a score over par. When presented with the trophy Mitch could be heard saying “fucking shite”. Not sure who or what this was directed at but who appear to sum up the day Team 2 had.

With the tight tree lined fairways and large amounts of water Devilbend usually throws up some interesting shots.

Baby Koala, more worried about a shout for not making the ladies and having put one in the water stating that it would’ve made it past if it hadn’t landed in the water. According to his captain Joe this was far from the truth.

Not to be outdone, Scott, also from Team 1, decided to hit his ball so hard his 7-iron snapped in half, leaving him holding only the grip. More worried about finding the head it was a great surprise when his ball ended up 15 feet from the hole.

NTP: With the genuine McClelland Prov1 stocks drained at Sandringham donations were gladly accepted, with Stork supplying a couple of vintage DDHs for the winners. As luck would have it, he was able to get them back with his shot on the 11th.

Event Management for the day saw a couple of celebrity chefs take the reins, with Taffy and Hubba taking care of the day. Mains of lamb shanks and mash potato was supplied by Taffy, with the sauce being so good Hubba was seen sipping on cups of it throughout the afternoon. Following on from that Hubba served up fruit, ice cream and honeycomb. Well done on the day lads.

To finish just a bit of housekeeping. If you are rostered on event management and can’t do your day, it is your responsibility to swap it with someone else. It is not up to the committee to cover your lazy arse. Also, with Andy Macs day just around the corner if you would like to donate any prizes the committee would gladly accept them.
