Australia day weekend. As is custom it was one of the club’s marquee events, the Garry Buick Memorial at Amstel. All the usual suspects gathered for a toast to Garry on the first tee, following a few words from Koala.
The course itself was probably in its poorest condition for many years, but even with the tees at the back, scoring was reasonable.
A special mention to Alan Anderson on his return to the fold after battling illness, great to see him in amongst the group again.
A few nervous tee shots off the first would set a few back early on, but not Koala who managed to recover with 35 points to sit leader in the clubhouse with one group to finish.
But one member who just couldn’t dig deep enough to recover was last month’s winner Biggsy, who presented a very poor card of 18 points.
But at the business end Koala would be pipped at the post by one point by Sammy who came home in the last group with 36 points.
As has been the case each year we would welcome Aileen back to headquarters to present the perpetual trophy to the winner.
The coffers took a belting as the prizes would just keep raining down on Sammy, these included a Titliest cap, Greg Norman shirt, full box of balls, Golf shop vouchers, golf glove, football, beauty products, holdall, to name just a few.
Nearest the pins, would carry an extra edge, with last year’s winner, Spoon, very generously putting up $100 for anyone who could make a birdie on a par 3. No-takers!
Nearest the pins went to Deeks, Girdy and Barra.
A massive thanks to all those who donated prizes throughout the day, much appreciated.
