Garry Buick Memorial

Pakenham on Sunday, 23rd January, 2011. Format: Stableford

Another big day in the MGC calendar with the 5th outing of the Garry Buick memorial. The weekend was to be coupled with a birthday bash at headquarters the night before to celebrate Winker turning 50. This event was to have a very large bearing on the days proceedings. With the mass contingent turning up late with busted heads all round, some worse than others mind you, we had a few words from Koala and it was bottoms up to toast Garry to kick the day off.

The hot weather, the copious amounts of alcohol consumed prior along with the lack of sleep was to quickly take it’s toll on the members.

Due to recent form and match preparation of late, Joe showed some initiative at last game and decided, that as it was Winker’s birthday he would shout them a cart for the day, nice thought! However, when it came time to saddle up Joe booted the birthday boy into touch and drafted the hapless Bob into the passengers seat. The irony of this was that it would be these 3 who would be battling it out for the NAGA.

On top of last months outing in which Joe posted a sad 13 points he managed to table only 12 this time, this was still enough to cover birthday boy Winker who could only just get to double figures with 10 points. These cards were to prove more than enough to cover last years ‘NAGA of the year’, Bob, who was to lodge a card registering only 3 points. This was a pitiful performance from someone who has now comfortably broke the Macsters record of 7 points at Berwick Montuna back in 2006.

Bob - 3 points

Whilst these 3 battled it out together it was their 4th member of the group, Paul who was registering high scores on the leader board, coming home with a very fine 43 points, alas this was not enough to cover Biggsy who was also carding some outrageous numbers finishing with 44 points for the day.

Yet again we had the pleasure of Aileen, taking time out and coming along to present the trophy to the winner.

Biggsy and Aileen

Biggsy with 'skull' cap - 44 points

A fitting winner for the day for someone who was a good friend of Garrys, which is always nice. Along with the ‘skull’ cap Biggsy managed to pick a swag of goodies from the MGC coffers including a golfing polo shirt , hats, golf balls, leather money clips, t-shirts, key rings, Jim Beam goods a $100 voucher for Ray Drummonds and a kind donation from Aileen of a golfing lesson.

‘Nearest the Pins’ were to receive a $20 voucher and a sleeve of MGC pro-v1 golf balls. The winners of these prizes were Biggsy, Barra, Winker, Paul and Billy Mac.

The handicappers were set to move into action with a few members playing above their handicaps, however it was Biggsy who would be cut from 31 to 28 and the very unfortunate Paul, cut from 20 to 18 without winning.

Happy birthday also to Baby Koala who celebrated his 25th.
