The week leading into this month’s outing had the Barra dealing with the usual late call-offs, which had him managing the membership with the utmost professionalism the club has come expect, and some take for granted.
The weather had just dealt Melbourne one of its biggest flash floods on record the day before and the golf day itself was forecast thunderstorms. Again it was left to the Barra to have a wee word upstairs and delay said downpour until the troops returned to headquarters and were comfortably getting tore into the bevvy.
The call offs meant that the order of play had to be shuffled, sending 2 groups of 3 out first and relegating, what turned out to be the winners group, down the pecking order, much to the grievance of Clayton.
Last month’s wife v wife spat between Christophe and Paul had obviously not been resolved as both jostled for captaincy in the singles event, to the point of a coin toss had to be made to see who would tee-off first. This had a bigger impact on Christophe as he smashed his ball a full 20 meters into the safety fence, just before the ladies tee, to go on and mark down his first out of the day. Paul would promptly assume ‘cheshire cat’ mode.
But it was to be the bookies outsider, the Koala, who would come up trumps on the day romping home with an impressive 42, no 41 points. This did fuel some debate into the scoring of the group which included Clayton, Tich and Baby Koala that after playing in this golf club for around 15 years that no-one new how to score stableford. In the end it was jackets on for the KB. As usual it was a fine array of prizes for the eucalyptus eater, a collection of hats for varying weather conditions, balls and golf towels.
Unfortunately, for every winner there has to be a loser, and this month we managed to put up 2 of our finest. Dave and Bob had tied with 21 points, but on a count back it was Bob who would be re-acquainted with his mate NAGA, much to the relief of Dave………………..and Bec.
Nearest the pins for the day went to Paul, Spoon and the Barra.
Other memorable shots of the day saw Mitch having to use his ‘tree-wood’ with his ball in a difficult lie
With Joe absent for the day it was left to Shug to administer a 3 shot cut to the Koala, taking him down to 30. Dave had saw the opportunity to apply for a slide in his handicap, with the ruthless one away, knowing that Shug had been known be a bit more forgiving in the past (re Snappy Tom). This was to prove a fruitless exercise for Dave as he obviously hadn’t worked out the going rate for such a favour.
Big thanks to Alan Anderson for throwing more prizes into the MGC bounty.
Next month we will be playing 2 ball best ball at Carrington Park on 11th April at the earlier tee-off 7.15 am.
