Last game of the season had us down to Carrington Park, Rosebud for the Garry Buick Memorial, fine weather and hunners o’ prizes up for grabs, the format for the day was to be stroke. In keeping with the season proper Billy Mac was ‘MIA’ again.
So, onto the first tee and with a few short words in memory of Garry from Koala we all raised a glass and fired down a wee dram to kick start the day.
It was also noted that it was the Barra’s birthday and that he turned up a tad worse for wear, this prompted one of last month’s NAGA recipients, Andy Mac, to sink the boot into the wee man by telling one of his fellow competitors that he hoped to be passing on said NAGA trophy to the birthday boy in about 6 hours time. Poor form, but karma was to yet to play its hand to ‘old fanta pants’.
Some varied golf seemed to follow with the cards spreading the field over more than 30 shots, before and after handicap deductions. But reigning supreme on the day was Hughie with a round of 85 with a handicap of 24 sailed in with a net 61 to take the chocolates. Nice to have Aileen come up, as usual, to present Garry’s trophy to the winner.
Hughie with just a few of the spoils (as you can see quite excited too).
However some 30 strokes off the pace, playing off the same handicap, was to be ‘duracell’ himself Andy Mac with a gross 115, net 91. This unfortunate round of golf meant that karma had well and truly shined on yer man and the golden opportunity to nail birthday Barra was overturned and Barra was left re-instating the NAGA to the McKenna household for the close season.
Hughie and Andy Mac (ranga, agent orange, annie, copper knob, bushfire).
Following the NAGA’s makeover from Christophe, Andy Mac decided to join in and produced yer man with one of his own :-
Looking more like him everyday !
Nearest the pins for the day, with a $20 voucher for each hole went to Dave, Deeks, Damo and Winker x 2. Also longest drive on the 18th went to Damo with an outrageous hit which won him a couple of Doyles vouchers and cost him a word with the handicapper.
Due to the tasty round of golf shown by Hughie the role of handicapping was again thrust into the sole hands of Joe, who wasted no time in slashing as follows; Hughie cut 4 shots to 20, Damo cut 3 shots to 18, Winker cut 2 shots to 24, Alan cut 3 shots to 32 and Clayton cut 1 shot to 27. This was followed by the second slider of the season with surprise surprise ‘Garfield’ moving out 3 shots to 27.
The end to a successful and very enjoyable season, some fine golf and some not so fine golf, but most of all lots of laughs with some brilliant people. Thanks to all those who donated prizes throughout the season, much appreciated. Most of all our thanks to the ladies who volunteer their time once a month to serve us dinner back at the club, in spite of all the banter (abuse), hopefully they will come back next season.
