Round 1: August 27th: Bayviews: 8.00am Tee-off: Singles
Round 1 of Season 2023-24 saw the troops head to the familiar Bayviews Golf Course. With the course and layout familiar to most players, not many surprises were expected, although as always Round 1 has a way of throwing in a couple of curve balls. Predominant member of the committee, Hubba, produced an unfortunate prep very reminiscent of his father-in-law, with others facing a scramble for new shoes just some of the issues facing the players.
After an extensive fact-finding mission to Bali the committee where fortunate enough to source a new supplier for this season’s NAGA hats. Carryover NAGA Stork was the lucky man to model it for the day. With many hidden features the lucky winners will have fun with these over the season.
The race for winner was a close-run affair with a countback needed to separate the eventual winner. Both Scott, and carryover NAGA Stork finishing with 37pwa. With a very impressive 21 on the back 9 Stork take out the win. A true boiled lollies to chocolates story in Round 1, with Joe finishing in 3rd with 34. He did have a good feeling before tee-off, stating “he was happy that there weren’t any Jocks in the group in front to steal his ball”. For his efforts Stork took home a shirt, pair of FJ socks and Mitre 10 bucket hat.
The race for NAGA was a very interesting event with the before mentioned Hubba well in the mix, reigning NAGA of the Year Billy Mac, and a couple of marsupials battling it out for last place. With a round almost over before it began by forgetting his clubs, a couple of spews along the way and a spectacular OUT of the 3rd consisting of: a drive not making the ladies, 2m second shot, fresh airy 3rd and 4th over the fence, followed by a sleep in the carpark at the end of the round you would be pretty certain that the NAGA was making its way to Frankston South. Enter Billy Mac! With a grand total of 17pwa and 7 OUTS, not even Hubba could outdo this performance. Lucky he hasn’t cleaned the dust from the mantle, so he knows where to put it. With Koala ending the day 2nd last with 21, Hubba in 3rd last with 24 and Baby Koala following on 25. This sees Billy Mac move to a 48 handicap and will see him easily smash the 50-handicap glass ceiling this season.
NTP: This round saw a different format for recording NTP. Given the prep of Hubba the NTP markers were left in the car, with the first group making do with what they had, old score cards, ripped sleeve boxes just to name a few. It was no surprise that NTP prizes didn’t materialise either, with the winner’s hopeful for next round.
