Round 8: Churchill Park: Pairs: April 9th
The penultimate round for Season 2022-23 saw the troops travel to Churchill Park on what was forecast to be a cold and wet morning. Luckily for all involved the rain stayed away and we stayed dry. The heat of the competition between teams was hot with each 4-ball playing a game of matchplay, with the saying you only have to beat the other team in your group at eh forefront of each captain’s thinking
Despite the conditions leading up to the day the course was in pretty good condition except for the greens which had been recently cored, covered in sand with fluffy grass which made putting difficult to even the best putters in the club. Add to the mix a tight tree lined course to trouble the erratic players and scores were expected to be on the higher side, which was the case for all but one team.
Given the uneven number of teams it was Team 7 of Girdy and Baby Koala that hit off first, and given the clean run, not having another team to deal with and marking their own card, it was no surprise that they ended up the convincing winners on the day, carding a net score 66.75, with runners up Barra and Mitch a further 5 shots back on 71.5. After the game captain Girdy remarked that he mentioned to Baby Koala that they’d have to par the last to have any chance of winning, who given the burden of the last drive riffled his drive a full 54m to set up the chance and ended up with bogey. Lucky they where streaks ahead at that point.
With only 2.5 shots separating 2nd and last the race for NAGA was a much closer tussle, with only 0.75 separating the bottom 3 teams. Pre-game favourites for the award being Team 1 Billy A and Clayton, Team 3 Joe and Billy Mac and Team 6 Red and Sutho filling the last 3 spots, with the unlucky team of Joe and Billy Mac doing just enough to secure Mr Numpty and the turkey hats for the last round of the season with a final score of 74, followed by Team 1 on 73.5 and Team 6 with 73.25. This just goes to show the benefit of having the highest handicapper the club has ever seen in your team doesn’t equal success. On presentation, the question was posed that the person who most deserved Mr Numpty should collect it. Billy Mac being the honest golfer he is left it for Joe to collect. Well played Billy.
NTPs for the day
3rd: Barra, 6th: Mitch, 11th: Red, 17th: Girdy
Event management for the day was once again left to a select few that seem to step up when members feel they don’t need to help out. Just remember that the club doesn’t run itself and all that is asked is that each member runs one game a season. If you’re unsure of the duties involved just ask before the day and we’ll let you know. Not that much to ask I wouldn’t think. Pizzas were supplied by the club and perhaps the healthiest dessert of the season of fruit salad and reduced sugar ice cream supplied by Barra. Just a side note this is the 3rd time Barra has stepped in to supply food on the day.
Hope you all had a good Easter and see you all at Centenary Park May 7th for the final round of the season
