Round 7: Cape Schanck: Singles; March 12th:
A full field was booked to take on Cape Schanck for the 5th instalment of the Andy Mac Memorial Golf Day, which saw friends old and new take to the course for the day. An unexpected late withdrawal from Joe, who was suffering from chest pains on the morning and went to hospital for tests, saw the field reduced to 23. Thankfully for all involved he was discharged with no major issues, although a dark cloud was cast over the field until the news came through.
Once the formalities of the toast to Andy was taken care of, the first group teed up. Such was the pressure on the leading group the tee shots that followed were nothing short of ordinary, and given the noise from the tee for subsequent groups the pressure got to a lot of players. With the course in great condition but the weather struggling to decide if it was going to be hot or cold scoring was expected to be tight, and with only 1 player scoring better than handicap this proved to be the case.
The race for winner of the day was a tightly run affair, with only 2 points separating the top 5 players. Group 2 saw Hubba and Tommy duke it out to see who would win the group and ultimately the day, with a long wait to see if the winner would came from the group. With the last group coming in the wait proved to be well worth it with Hubba taking the win with 37 pwa, with a countback needed to separate Tommy in 2nd, Titch in 3rd and Baby Koala coming in 4th with 36 points. This was made all the worse for Tommy when he realised he would’ve won if Hubba hadn’t thrown the game at Brighton and received a one shot slide. This was back-to-back wins for Hubba in this event, a feat made all the more impressive as he would’ve had his father-in-law’s trip to hospital in the front of his mind throughout the day. Well played Hubba. As is customary for the day the prizes on offer where immense, with Hubba walking away with a Cape Schanck shirt, RACV pen, towel, picnic pack, sleave of Pro V1, slab of CC and soda, can of organic jack fruit and a voucher for a round at Rossdale valued at $880, generously donated by Spoon.
2nd placed Tommy collecting a $150 visa card, hat and sleave of Pro V1.
3rd placed Baby Koala collecting $50, bottle of Johnny Walker and baboon head cover.
The race for NAGA wasn’t as tight, and it wasn’t until the last group came in that the ever present Billy Mac could breathe a sigh of relief. Although Spoon said after that he enjoyed the day this wasn’t reflected in his score, with 20 points well and truly enough to secure Mr Numpty and the turkey hat, with Billy Mac coming in with 23, followed by Nick with 25. Welcome back Spoon, see you next year.
NTPs for the day saw another back-to-back performance with Red taking out the 14th.
3rd Red – bottle of Smirnoff
4th Stewy D – slab of Carlton Dry
7th Paul – bottle Jim Beam
14th Red – bottle Grey Goose, $50 and trophy
16th Ryan – bottle Makers Mark
Secret 6 was won by Baby Koala with 13 points, which was generously donated to men’s health.
Event management for the day was run by Billy Mac and Mitch. With Mitch unavailable, many people pitched in to ensure the day ran smoothly. Although he wasn’t present Mitch donated funds and a splendid meal of roast meats and salad was provided, along with chocolate cake and ice cream supplied by Billy Mac.
As is always the case for this day there were many people that contributed, whether it be with time, donating prizes, turning up to play on the day, or generally pitching in to make sure the day runs smoothly. Thank you to all and hope to see you all again next year.
