Round 5: Mornington: 4-Ball: January 15th:

January 15th 2023 saw the MGC venture to Mornington Golf Club for what was a very significant day. Not only did it mark the start of the New Year for the club, but long-time member and current committee member Girdy turned the ripe old age of 50. With some fanfare and his family present he celebrated this milestone in some fashion and was presented with vouchers to the value of $550 and a personalised 1.75L bottle of Jim Beam. Happy Birthday Girdy. With his current form on the course and a stacked team he was expected to feature at the end of the day, although as the day wore on it became apparent it may not have been for the prize he expected.

The first tee saw some interesting shots, some drifting a few fairways over and Hubba, perhaps coming off a less than ideal prep rifling his shot into the carpark. Lucky it was a team event. At the end of the day there was only 1 team that finished under the card and it was the team of Red, Gav, Baby Koala and Tommy finishing with gross 70 and nett 58.25 to take out the winners jackets, with the team of Joe, Mitch, Hubba and Clayton finishing second with 73 gross and 60.25 nett. The winners taking home bucket hats and shirts from new major sponsor Mitre 10.

The race for NAGA saw early favourites Team 3 lead by first time captain Scott, with Chris T, Ryan and Billy Mac battle it out with the team lead by Girdy. It was to be a battle between inexperience managing Billy Mac and the volume of Jim Beam consumed by Girdy. It was noted during the round that Girdy had put the Jimmy away, such was the situation he found himself in. Although finishing with a better gross score it was the team lead by Girdy, with Barra, Koala and Winker that won the converted NAGA and it was Girdy who took home Mr Numpty and the turkey hats for next round, finishing with gross 75 and nett 64.375, narrowly beating out Scott’s team with gross 75, nett 62.25. Probably not the prize you would want to take home on your 50th, unlucky Girdy.

Event Management for the day was done by Koala and Taffy, although the latter wasn’t present on the day he served up Sticky date Pudding for dessert, much to the delight of the birthday boy. Perhaps due to having to do the work of 2 men or just lack of attention to detail the teams hit off with cards for the ladies tee, a fact that didn’t help the overall demeanour of Girdy for the from 9. This aside he served up a magnificent lasagne and salad. Well done Koala.
