Round 7: Cape Schanck: March 13th: Andy Mac Memorial Day
The 4th instalment of the Andy Mac Memorial was played in perfect golfing conditions, almost as if the great man was looking down on us yet again. With an extended field of 22, which saw the welcome appearance of many past MGC members, a great day ahead was expected. With the customary toast out of the way it was down to the first group to get us underway, with a very nervy tee off from Macca the last one to go down the middle of the fairway.
A special surprise was unveiled on the first tee with a new NAGA hat to replace the well-worn Twirlies, which had seen better days and in need of replacing. The fortunate player donning it for the first time was Red, although not sure how this will go with some of the bigger headed players in the club.
Surprising given the ideal conditions scoring was close with only 14 points separating 1st and last, with not one playing scoring better than their handicap.
Scoring was tight at both ends of the table, with a countback needed to decide who took out the top prize and close scoring at the bottom leaving several players sweating until the last group came in. At the top of the pile, it was a close-run race and after some interesting scoring was uncovered, it was Hubba who came out on top with a final score of 36pwa, narrowly beating out Ryan via countback and Winker finishing in 3rd place with 35pwa. As has become the norm for marque events prizes were awarded to all 3 players, although this year gift cards were the way to go. All major prizes this year generously donated by Tommy Hawkins, who although only a sub this year has been very generous throughout the season. Thankyou again Tommy for your generosity. The winner Hubba, along with the prestigious Jacket collected, a $200 Visa Card, Cape Schanck shirt, Ranfurlie hat and pack, Pro V1s and tee-bags,
Ryan taking home $150 Visa card, socks and Pro V1s
Winker walking away with $100 Visa card, hat and Pro V1s.
Along with his prizes Hubba was awarded the Andy Mac trophy to keep for the year and a memorial one to keep. Special thanks to Macca for participating in the day, your speech and awarding the trophy on what is surely a difficult day for you. Thanks again Macca for being part of the day.
At the other end you could throw a hat over the field, with 12 players coming in with 28 points or less. In the end there was only one clear winner for NAGA with Sutho coming in with a score of 22pwa, beating out Baby Koala on 24pwa, with major sponsor for the day Tommy not being able to back up his generosity off the course with decent golf on it with a final score of 25. For his trouble Sutho took home the new NAGA Turkey hat, Mr Numpty. Toilet Soccer to hopefully improve his putting and a box of genuine Pro V1 Tee Bags.
Introduced this year a new trophy was awarded for NTP on Andy’s hole, the 14th. Special thanks to Koala and Barra for producing this fabulous trophy.
As has been the case for the last 3 events, extra prizes were awarded for nearest the pin, with the introduction of a new award for NTP on Andy’s hole, the 14th. The inaugural winner of the trophy was Red, who also collected a bottle of Grey Goose and sleave of genuine Pro V1s.
The other nearest the pin awards went to:
3rd Hubba – bottle of Smirnoff, sleave Pro V1s
4th Joe – bottle of Smirnoff, sleave Pro V1s
7th Vic – bottle of Johnnie Walker, sleave Pro V1s
14th Red – Andy Mac NTP trophy, bottle Grey Goose, sleave Pro V1s
16th Alan – bottle. Sleave MGC Pro V1s
After a couple of drinks at Cape Schanck all players returned to Strikers club rooms for what turned out to be quite a celebration with many drinks had, along with many stories shared about life shared with Andy. Lunch on the day was supplied by Ryan with Bruschetta for entree, Lasagne and salad supplied by Billy A and dessert of Stick Date Pudding and ice cream supplied by Sutho. Stella effort boys!
Secret 6 was won by Big Kev with a score of 16 pwa, and following the good will of day all winnings were donated back to Men’s Health. Great work Kev.
