Round 5: January 23rd: Mornington: Singles:
With a scorching day forecast the earlier tee-off time of 7.08am was welcomed by all players, and a scorcher is what we got. The heat coupled with the hilly Mornington track resulted in low but tight scoring with 10 points separating the field, with the exception of one outlier that seemed to struggle more than most with the heat.
In a hard fought day 2 points was all that separated the top 5 players, with the eventual winner coming from Group 1 and having to suffer an agonising wait, in more ways than one, for the field to come in. After a rather large afternoon / evening on the vodkas the day before, it was Barra showing great intestinal fortitude who came away with the win on 35pwa, although celebrations were somewhat subdued due to a hangover that the heat of the day did little to help. Prizes for the day were a Titleist bucket hat, adidas polo shirt and a sleave of Chrome Soft Triple Track. Second place went to Koala with 34 points, followed by Winker, Girdy and Tommy with 33 points.
Competition for NAGA was also a close affair, with 3 points separating the bottom 4 with only the last group to come in. It was an anxious wait for Red with 25 points, who having had a similar prep to Barra, was sweating on the last group to come in and come in they did. Sammy, looking like a man who had just run around the course instead of cruising around in a cart, came in with 16 points and collected his mini me Mr Numpty and the twirly for our visit to Churchill Park. Unfortunately for Sammy an early spruke on the 10th backfired in spectacular fashion. After scoring 3 points points and drawing level with Winker on 11 pwa he was heard to say “I’ve got Winker covered!”, not quite Sammy, not quite.
With catering back, it was up to Joe, Girdy and Taffy to get the ball rolling, and what was produced will take some beating. Chicken salad supplied by Joe, Pulled Pork and coleslaw rolls by Girdy and Sticky Date Pudding by Taffy was a tremendous way to end the day. Thank you to all 3 for producing a stunning lunch.
Secret 6 went to Koala with 14 pwa, with all winnings kindly donated to Men’s Health.
