Round 6: March 7th: Cape Schanck – Andy Mac Memorial Day – Singles Event

The 3rd instalment of the Andy Mac Memorial Day was held Sunday 6th March at Cape Schanck, which saw the return of some familiar faces turning out to honour the great man in an extended field of 22 players. The cool overcast conditions couldn’t overshadow the traditional pre-round toast to Andy, kindly supplied by Hubba and Koala, and the warm feeling felt carried by the players going into the day.

With the game underway it was left to the players to honour Andy with some inspiring golf. Some achieved this, others not so much. The final standings had close scoring at either end of the table and a countback was needed to decide the winner. Throughout the day many drinks were had by most players, but it was the players at either end of the leader board that seemed to indulge the most, with the toast on the 14th tee proving to be pivotal in the scoring, with the winner seeming to embrace it and the eventual NAGA unable to keep his down and going to water soon after.

At the top end of the table the top 5 were separated by 2 points with a countback needed to decide the overall winner. It was a nervy time for the eventual winner, who having finished in the lead group had to wait for all players to come in to claim the victory. Girdy was deemed the winner with a score of 39 pwa, narrowly beating Billy A via countback , and Titch taking out 3rd place on 37, again via countback from Stewy Doolan, Winker and Koala. Given the occasion, not only did he receive the Tweed jacket but the vast bounty of prizes on offer, including golf bag and buggy, range finder, hats and Cape Schanck shirt to name a few.

Unfortunately, both Macca and Natalie couldn’t attend on the day due to illness, so it fell to last year’s winner to present Girdy with the highly sort after trophy. This was an emotional experience for both men and shows the level of respect each holds for Andy.

As has become custom,2nd and 3rd place getters also received prizes for their efforts. With 2nd placed Billy A receiving a Taylormade hat and $50 Dan Murphy card and 3rd placed Titch receiving a $25 Dan Murphy card. Prizes on the day were donated by a large number of members so thanks to all who donated and helped make this the special day it was.

At the tail end of the leader board, we had close scoring also. Again, it was 2 shots separating the bottom 6 players. With the eventual winner saying throughout the round that you only need to beat one player, he set his sights on perpetual NAGA winner Clayton, but given his inability to hold down a vodka shot, coupled with an inability to see clearly soon after it was Joe with 26 pwa narrowly beating out Baby Koala and Snappy Tom on 27, with some very familiar faces at this end of the table, Billy Mac, Alan and Clayton a further point away on 28.  Although his memory is somewhat cloudy of the event he now has Mr Numpty as company for the next month.

CS NAGA

Notable mention needs to go to Clayton at this stage, who after the round walked square into the window leading to the deck, leaving a face print on the glass in the process, bending his glasses and drawing blood, although “it didn’t take him down”.

Nearest the Pins for the day carried not only the standard McClelland Pro V1’s but also a crisp $50 note, kindly donated by Clayton, Joe and Girdy.
