Round 5: Bay Views – February 21st: 7:22am
A cool windy morning greeted us as we arrived at Bay Views Golf Club for an early tee-off of 7:22am. The mood soon turned frosty when it became clear Team 1 captain Daniel wasn’t going to turn up and they were going to have to play as a 3 ball, with Billy A having to step up and lead Sammy and Billy Mac. With the hilly terrain, windy conditions and tough greens a long hard day was to be had by most teams. With early predictions of clear winners and NAGAs would this change things up a bit?
Firstly, to the days winners. It was a close race for top spot, with the top 3 teams all finishing under par, but it was Team 4 captained by Joe, with Barra, Winker and Tommy coming in 1 shot ahead of the unlucky Team 2 of Red, Ryan, Koala and Clayton. The winners got fitted for their jackets and took away prizes including hats and safety glasses, and of course the obligatory 1 shot cut for the Andy Mac round, urging Barra to ask the question “What no balls?” Guess you can’t have everything.
The other end of the table saw a clear winner. Billy A, thrust into the captaincy, was unable to inspire his team who ended up 5 shots adrift of 3rd place. The blame game started from the off and continued well into presentations back at Strikers, with the general consensus being Sammy had let his team down (as shown in the presentation picture), but surely a performance this bad had to be a team effort! On presentation of the twirly’s and Mr Numpty, Billy A proclaimed that it “leaves a bad taste in the mouth” and one observer to state that Sammy and Billy Mac were too busy comparing teeth to concentrate on golf.
On presentation of Mr Numpty, it was noted that Sammy does strike an uncanny resemblance to the wee man. You be the judge.
NTP for the day received a couple of genuine McClelland Pro Vs: 3rd Winker, 6th Red, 17th Mitch.
Handicap changes for the upcoming Any Mac Memorial game.
Cuts: Joe 13 → 12, Barra 23 → 22, Winker 26 → 25, Tommy 35 → 34
Slides: Billy A 18 → 19, Sammy 24 → 25, Billy Mac 41 → 42 (a new record)
Thanks goes out to the management team for the day, with Clayton supplying chicken curry, chips and rice, with Mitch following up with ice cream, Baileys and chocolate. Special thanks to Barra for taking care of the pre-game requirements.
On a more serious note, it was reported that a possible rules violation occurred. Mitch, having had a ‘fresh airy’ on the 16th took another swing at the ball out of frustration, except this time making contact leading the team captain to just laugh and walk off. This isn’t the first time this season this captain has been called out on questionable use of the rules and is surely starting to fall into the Patrick Reed category. Maybe a closer eye is needed on said captain.
Hope you all enjoyed the day and look forward to seeing you all at Cape Schanck for the Andy Mac Memorial day over the Labour Day long weekend.
