The Labour Day weekend would host the inaugural Andy McKenna Memorial down at the picturesque Cape Schanck resort. Course was in great condition and the weather was spot on.

The field was slightly depleted, but that wasn’t going to deter from what proved to be a fantastic day. However, one special guest was on hand to play, Andy’s son, Macca.

With everyone gathered, except Hughesy who stopped off at the driving range to warm up, Barra was to say a few words prior to hit off along with a toast to set the day up nicely.

Barra and his able accomplice Grimbo would be manning the drinks cart for the day. Following the carry on at Flinders, this appears not to be Barra’s calling and his desperation to return to fitness needs to come sooner rather than later, if only for his own sake.

With much at stake there would be a strong battle to take out the honours on this MGC marquee event. A late inclusion to the field was Joe junior, although a past winner of another marquee event, this day just wasn’t to be his as he could only record points on 9 of the holes on his card, with a tally of 21. This was enough to be taking the dog and a twirly hat home.Junior

With most of the field in the clubhouse, it was the Ranfurlie boys Joe and Christophe, both sitting on 38 points, sweating it out to take out the prestige of being the first name on the trophy. However, the masterstroke from Hughesy to skip the pre-game toast and divert to the driving range proved to be the winning formula as he posted a very handsome 41 points. Macca Hughesy

Back at headquarters, a few words from Barra as he introduced Macca to present the trophy to the winner on the day, Hughesy.Hughesy trophyHughesy trophies

The reigns were then handed back to Barra to empty the MGC prize coffers onto the awaiting recipient.Hughesy prizes2

Hughesy prizesPrizes included Callaway bag, Adidas umbrella, Taylormade putter, Callaway towel, dozens of golf balls, St. Andrews merchandise, Movie tickets, Dan Murphy voucher, sweets, tin of lentils, fruit basket, belt, lunch cool bags, various hats far too much to try to name all. Special mention however to his very own take home prize of his personal “Andy Mac” fish.Andy Mac fish

Nearest the pins today carried their own special prizes with the following results; on the 3rd Redder would take home a sleeve of prov1s, on the 6th Hughesy a 10 pack of Jim Beam and coke, the 11th carried $50 cash which also went to Hughesy, on the 14th Winker won himself a slab of VB and finally on the 16th, Vic also took home $50 in cash.

The handicap adjustments were as follows; Hughesy cut from 34 to 32, Joe junior 24 to 25, Taffy 21 to 22, Vic 8 out to 9.

Also running in tandem with today’s event was the semi-final of the knockout cup, still left in the race was Joe, Billy A. Bob and Koala. Coming out on top, and heading to the final on the last day are Joe and Bob.

The ‘’Secret 6’’ was tied by multiple players and as a result was donated to the Men’s Health fund.

Thanks to all who contributed to a great day, both in donations and participation. The bar has been set high for the next 9 years.
