Format: Matchplay/stableford
First game of season 2017-18 and it was pastures new for the members congregating at Waverley golf club. The format of the day was to be stableford for all players, along with round 1 of the annual Matchplay tournament. We had 2 MGC virgins taking the field, Macster’s son-in-law Daniel and Tommy Hawkins, the latter pitching an early spruik as a debutant winner, this proved to be a bridge too far for Tommy as 13 points was all he could muster for his day out.
Unfortunately the weather had played a major role in reducing the track to a very wet and muddy place. This was to play havoc with the scores as the members struggled with the conditions, all except 2. One of those was Baby Koala who more than matched the conditions with a runaway score of 40 points, impressive play first up from a spell.
The other member who, with total disregard for the weather, quite comfortably went about his normal business was the Macster, carding a pitiful 12 points for the day, thus commencing his annual handicap slide from 36 towards the 40s.
The Matchplay was a topsy turvy affair with some of the matches going down to the wire. Winners on the day were as follows; Paul bt. Macster 7 & 5, Ryan bt. Andy 1 up, Baby Koala bt. Clayton 8 & 6, Joe bt. Biggsy 2 &1, Tim bt. Red 1 up, Sammy bt. Hubba 4 & 3, Winker bt. Deeks 1 up, Christophe bt. Barra 5 & 4, Bob bt. Taffy 4 & 3. These 9 winners will be joined in round 2 with Sutho, Snappy Tom, Koala, Mitch and the 3 best losers, Andy Mac, Red and Deeks to make up the round of 16.
Nearest the pins on the day went to Taffy (3rd),Andy Mac (5th), Joe (13th), Nick (16th).
Secret six was won by Daniel and Christophe both with 12 points to share the spoils.
The handicap adjustments were made with Baby Koala coming in from 27 to 25. The bottom 4 eased out 1 point each; Macster 36 to 37, Tommy H. 28 to 29, Taffy 18 to 19 and Barra 20 to 21.

The first five groups will host round one of the annual Matchplay tournament. The 10 winners will be joined by Mitch, Koala and Snappy Tom (byes) along with the 3 best losers to make up a round of 16.
All 23 players will also compete in a stableford competition on the day.
