FLINDERS – Jack Jones Memorial
Sunday, 2nd November, 2014
Format: Stableford
This would be our 7th visit to Flinders to play in the Jack Jones Memorial Day. Typically the weather was not too pleasant, mainly gusty winds and was to play a part on the scorecards at day’s end. Traditionally a toast was held to Jack prior to tee-off. A few members’ pre-match preparation left a bit to be desired and reflected in the points tally. Bob, whose concentration levels were seriously depleted throughout the day, managed to rack up a total of 12 points. This was enough to pip his partner in crime Joe, who could only muster 9 points for his efforts, this included a siesta in the shelter at the ‘coffin’ hole, which seemed rather appropriate at the time considering the nick he was in. Joe managed to go from playing a group of 4, then a group of 1, then a group of 5 during his walk around the course. More than enough to secure the NAGA for the second time in this event.
With the most of the scorecards ranging from Joe’s 9 points through to 33 points, it would be Clayton who’d stand head and shoulders above the pack to win by a clear 11 points to card a 44 for the day.
Clayton would be the 2nd man to win this event for the 2nd time, the other being Deeks.
MGC prize locker would be generously unlocked again and masses of prizes shelled out in the form of a Flinders cap, traditionally a Flinders polo, bottle whisky, Callaway towel, beach towel, hats, cooler boxes, camelback drink dispenser, years subscription to golf digest, umbrella, Callaway polo, MGC prov1 golf balls, Rayban sunglasses, neck cooler, beanie, stubby holder, office stationery, flag, wine coolers and a bottle of Dom Perignon champagne to name just some.
Nearest the pins had an added incentive this year with a donation of $100 given to the NTP on the 12th hole (Aunt Sally), this was won by Christophe, other winners on the rest of the par 3s were Sammy, Barra and Spoon who picked the best mini golf bag pen set, which came with its own piece of genuine Wembley turf from 1977.
The handicapping was left to Joe in the absence of Hughie. He then cut Clayton 4 shots from 34 to 30, following an 11 point win over his nearest competitor this did nothing less than outrage the members, as it flew in the face of the pre-season claim that anyone shooting over their handicap would be cut accordingly.
The handicapping duties were then handed over to Vic as of next month’s game.
Barra also announced his regret as he stepped down from being an organiser of the club’s events, effective immediately.
